Clay Snowman

Clay Snowman

My son just started preschool and I was looking to make a handmade gift for his teachers. We had some left over clay from other projects (Clay Ganesha and Diwali lamp).

Items needed for this activity:
- Natural Clay (found in Michael's store)
-Sharpie
-Drinking Straw (preferably red or orange)
-Sharpie
-Pipe cleaners
-small lids (from toothpaste, milk can etc.)

Get two small balls of clay. Try to make it as smooth as possible.

Cut a straw so that it is a little shorter than both balls combined. Poke the straw into the bigger clay ball (which is the snowman's body0. Now poke the small clay ball (snowman's head) on the other end of the straw. Make sure the head and the body are touching to each other and there is no straw visible on either ends.

Now poke a pipe cleaner on the snowman's head and twist it if you want to make this to an ornament.
Smooth out any visible cracks or lines by wetting your fingers.

Cut a red/orange straw to make the nose. We cut through the straw and gave it a sharp edge to make it look like a carrot. Poke this in the middle of the head.

Cut another pipe cleaner in half (for hands) and poke it on both sides of the snowman's body.
Once again smooth out any cracks using water and fingers.

Now let it dry for about a day or longer if your snowman is big.

Once its dry, you can paint it white.Add eyes, mouth and button using a sharpie.

Cut another pipe cleaner in half and use it as a scarf around his neck.

Paint the lid black to make the hat. Glue the hat onto the snowman.

We wrote the name and year on the bottom of the snowman. It makes a great keepsake or a teacher gift.
